Our hot take this month is…most people come to Moab for the daytime and leave without seeing the best show in town. Sure the red rock is spectacular, no argument there. But the Moab area sits in one of the darkest corners of the continental United States, and if you spend every night in a hotel parking lot glow, you are missing half the trip.

Why the Moab Area Is One of the Best Stargazing Destinations in the Country

Both Arches and Canyonlands are certified International Dark Sky Parks, and nearby Dead Horse Point State Park holds the same designation. That certification is not a marketing sticker. It means measurably dark skies with almost no light pollution, the kind of darkness where the Milky Way casts a visible band across the sky and you can pick out satellites drifting between constellations.

You’d be shocked by the number of our guests that are absolutely stunned by it. If you have only ever seen a few dozen stars from a suburb, your first clear night near Moab will genuinely rearrange your expectations.

The Best Stargazing Spots Near Moab

Arches National Park

Panorama Point and the Windows section are favorites. The park stays open 24 hours, so you can enter late when day crowds are long gone.

Dead Horse Point State Park

Our pick for first timers. It is compact, easy to navigate in the dark, and the overlook views at night are unforgettable. The park also hosts ranger led night sky events in season.

Canyonlands, Island in the Sky

The most remote option, which means the darkest skies. Worth the drive if you are serious about astrophotography.

The La Sal Mountain Loop

The locals’ answer. At 8,000 feet you are above much of the haze and dust, the air is cooler and clearer, and you do not need a park entrance or a late night drive. You just need to step outside. Of course we’re partial because our property sits right on the La Sal Mountain Loop.

When Is the Best Time to Stargaze in Moab?

Plan around the moon, not the season. A full moon is beautiful but it also can wash out the sky a bit, so aim for the week around a new moon if you can. The Milky Way core is most visible from roughly March through October, and spring and fall nights offer the best combination of clear skies and comfortable temperatures. Summer works too, but give the sky an hour after full dark and let your eyes adjust for 20 minutes. No phone screens. That part is non negotiable.

The Case for Sleeping Under Dark Skies Instead of Driving to Them

Here is where we’ll be opinionated. Driving 45 minutes back to town at midnight after stargazing is a terrible way to end a perfect night. Staying at elevation solves that. Whispering Oaks Ranch sits at 7,950 feet on the La Sal Mountain Loop, backed by miles of forest land with no streetlights in any direction. On a clear night the stargazing from your cabin porch rivals anything inside the parks, and your bed is 30 feet away instead of 30 miles.

Bring a blanket, pour something warm, and look up. The show starts every night at dark, and admission is free.

After a long day hiking Devils Garden or off-roading through Hell’s Revenge, sinking into a hot tub under a sky full of stars is the kind of detail that turns a good Moab trip into one you’ll talk about for years. It’s no surprise that “Moab cabins with hot tubs” is one of the most searched lodging phrases in southeast Utah. But not every hot tub is created equal, and the listing photos don’t always tell the whole story. Here’s what to look for before you book.

Private vs. Shared Hot Tubs

The single most important question to ask: is the hot tub private to your cabin, or shared with other guests? A private tub on your own deck means soaking on your own schedule. A shared tub means rotating with strangers, posted hours, and a less-than-romantic vibe. If the listing doesn’t say “private hot tub” explicitly, ask before you book.

The View Matters More Than You Think

A hot tub tucked behind a fence facing a parking lot is a very different experience than one perched on a deck with red rock views. The best Moab cabins position their hot tubs to capture the landscape of stone cliffs, juniper-dotted hills, or open desert sky. Look for words like “overlook,” “panoramic,” or “private deck” in the description, and check photos for what’s actually visible from the tub itself, not just the cabin.

Year-Round Use and Temperature

Moab is a four-season destination, and a properly maintained hot tub should be usable in all of them. Winter soaks under fresh snow are genuinely magical, but only if the tub holds temperature in cold weather. Confirm the tub is heated year-round and ask about typical temperatures. 102-104°F is the standard sweet spot.

In summer, some properties offer “cool-down” mode where the tub doubles as a plunge pool. A real perk when daytime highs hit triple digits.

Cleanliness and Maintenance

This is the part nobody likes to think about, but it’s the difference between a relaxing soak and a gamble. Reputable Moab cabin operators drain and refill hot tubs between guests, test water chemistry daily, and document their cleaning schedule. Read recent reviews specifically for hot tub mentions. If you see complaints about cloudy water, low temperatures, or “out of order” notices, keep scrolling.

Privacy and Lighting

A hot tub right next to your neighbor’s deck isn’t much of a getaway. Look for cabins where hot tubs are screened by trees, fencing, or natural distance from other units. Lighting matters too. Look for soft deck lighting for safety, but minimal light pollution so you can actually see the stars Moab is famous for.

Practical Details Worth Confirming

Before you book, get clear answers on:

Is there an additional cleaning fee for hot tub use?

Are towels provided, or should you bring your own?

What’s the maximum capacity? (Most fit 4-6 comfortably.)

Are there quiet hours that limit nighttime use?

Why It’s Worth Getting Right

A hot tub isn’t just an amenity. For most Moab visitors, it’s a recovery tool. After 8 miles of hiking or a full day in the saddle of a mountain bike, hot water on tired muscles is the difference between feeling great the next morning and feeling crushed. Pair that with a private deck, spectacular views, and a sky that turns the Milky Way into something three-dimensional, and you’ve got the moment that sells the whole trip.

3. The La Sal Mountain Loop Scenic Drive

Distance: Starts right near Whispering Oaks

One of the most beautiful drives in southeastern Utah begins just outside your cabin. The La Sal Mountain Loop Road winds past lakes, forests, and jaw-dropping overlooks all the way down to Castle Valley and back toward Moab. You can picnic at Oowah Lake, take short alpine hikes, or enjoy sunrise or sunset views over the Moab valley. Best of all, you’re already in the mountains, so this day trip is effortless.

4. Dead Horse Point State Park

5. Moab Adventures: Off-Roading, Rafting, and Mountain Biking

Distance: 30–40 minutes

Situated in the stunning La Sal Mountains overlooking the Moab area, Whispering Oaks offers private cabins, unmatched views, and peaceful mountain surroundings. It gives travelers the best of both worlds: easy access to Moab’s activities paired with quiet, rejuvenating accommodations away from the crowds.
